My first test flight with GoPro Hero 3 White mounted on the wing.

After a successful test of my Gopro on a offroad car, I have decided to mount it on a planeΒ΄s wing. I haven’t planed to do this, but as my next flight was on the glider (Blanik), and the speeds are really low (around 50-70 kts), and according to the GoPro’s website, it should hold speeds around 200 kts, I left it outside on the wing without putting any duct tape, or anything else to protect it from “falling from the skies” and loosing it…

The whole time I was quite nervous, looking back whether it was still there, attached to the wing… Luckily it was, until we landed.
After this successful flight without any losts, the next test flight must have been done on a light aircraft (Dynamic WT9), where the speeds are slightly higher, but within the limits as well (around 90 kts).

In this case I have mounted the camera close to the wingtip and crossed the fingers to not to lose it…

It has survived the 20 minutes long flight as well… I was really happy and was looking forward to see the recordings…

On this way, you can make a nice videos, or take a nice picture in the air…

Here you can see a short video of “stalling a glider”:

The next steps is to try it on a general aviation plane… πŸ™‚ Comming soon πŸ™‚

    • Thanxx mate! You are absolutely right, but what does actually Nikon mean in dutch? “Niet-kan?” πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I was thinking of using Nikon, but due the heavy weight, the wing would drop down, and it would also produce to much drag causing the glider turning into the side πŸ™‚ So, I had to choose the small light Gopro…

  2. The name Nikon is of Greek origin (I know πŸ™‚ ) and its meaning is “victory”.
Canon : A piece of work -usually in reference to literature- that was written by the original author. Spin-offs, fan fiction, and any work not written by the original author of that fictional universe is considered non-canon.
In other words : a copy of the original Nikon, a spin-off πŸ™‚

But I admit that I’m impressed by the quality delivered by the Gopro cam.

    • You are right. I bought a new suction mount later, but on my first flights I was literally experimenting.

For me the safest were the 3M adhesive mounts.

And since I lost one of the cameras with the mount from the wing, I don’t install it outside anymore, as it could be dangerous if it falls off and hits someone…
