Problems with the Gopro Hero battery life

Actually the battery of the Gopro is a real shame. The camera costs a lot of moeny, and its battery lasts maybe for one hour (if you use wifi and it is operating).

I have 2 Gopro’s; the White and the Black +. The Black plus should have a better performance, but if you install the camera on the plane, you have to turn it on to see the right angle of the picture, so you are already draining it. Once all the preflight checks completed I used to turn it on to forget it and to be able to concentrate on the flight. On this manner it lasts for approximately 1 hours and something, so if you plan to make a longer flight: FORGET IT!

Unfortunately you cannot walk out during the flight and change the battery. A good solution would be the Battery BacPac. On this manner you will win some additional juice and power for your gopro. Unfortunately my bacpac dind’t arrived, so I was not able to try it out…

On my last flight we came with my pilot friend Daldo on a idea to use the Remote Control, to save the battery. The advantage of the app is that you can see that it works properly (however it happened that it freezes on the mobiles’s display, so you are not sure whether it works or not). The advantage of the remote is, that you can turn the camera off and you save the battery. You record certain moments you are interested in, then you turn it off. On this way the battery lasts longer; maybe up to 2 hours.

Anyway it is a shame that the camera is so expensive and has such a bad performance. The marketing is marvellous, so it sells very good. Maybe some other advise on good performance camera instead of gopro?

I have also discovered, that my battery lasts longer if I use my ipad charger; it seems that if you connect it to your PC doesn’t provide the battery with enough “juice” for charging. So I am charging my battery only using my Ipad charger.

I will share with you some of the pictures I’ve made on our trip to Gran Canaria, hope you will like them!

  1. Actually you shouldn’t blame the GoPro for this “problem”. The GoPro is nice to have for an (advanced) amateur but it’s not a professional instrument. That appart, mounting the camera outside on a plane during flight conditions is not exactly what you would call “optimal conditions”. Try the GoPro mounted on a helmet while skiing in minus xΒ°C and you know what I mean. Either you should consider a connected back-up battery (eg. taped on the GoPro) or try to figure out an wired external DC current supply. The third option would be upgrading to professional equipment but that may be require a carriΓ¨re switch to fund this πŸ˜‰

    • Tjeke,

Partially you are right. But the temperature conditions in the Canary Islands at the altitudes we fly are not lower than the usual ones.

The external DC supply would an option inside the cabine (where the temperature is normal, but the battery dies after 1 hour anyway… πŸ˜‰ ), but outside it is almost impossible to bring a wire to the wingtip. At least I wouldn’t try to do this for security reasons.

The most people complain, that if you leave the camera a couple of days without using, the battery is drained and if you try to take a pic, the camera is off… Grrrr.

The application freezes as well in lot of situations, so I am still convinced the Gopro could have done a better work πŸ˜‰

To switch to Nikon is unfortunately not possible, if I would mount it on the wing the plane would constantly bank to the side because of its hiiiigh weight and could put the security of the flight in danger, haha.

Well. I’ll by the bacpac anyway, itΒ΄ll help at least a bit.

I am quite sure as well, that there are other products on the market (I saw some other cameras), making less marketing, and probably working a bit better.

      Safe landings! Go-Bro πŸ˜‰

  2. I have the GoPro Hero 3, and I also find the battery quite problematic. I have only used it inside and on my bike, and still the battery lasts for only about an hour. Quite annoying I must say!

I love the pictures above by the way!! πŸ™‚

    • I am with you. I am happy that I am not the only one having this problem. The additional problem is, when you are airborne, you can’t stop to change the batter pack πŸ˜€πŸ˜€. Glad to hear that you have enjoyed the pictures, it makes fun to see them (if the battery lasts), I’ll post a video soon as well ( have to edit edit it first!) πŸ˜€
